Qeshm Island explosions were heard late Monday night as multiple blasts hit Iran’s strategic island in the Strait of Hormuz…

Multiple explosions were heard on Iran’s strategic Qeshm Island and the nearby coastal city of Bandar Lengeh late on Monday night, amid rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian state media and US news outlets have reported conflicting details, but both confirm a major security incident in one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes.

What Happened on Qeshm Island?

According to Iran’s official news agency IRNA, at least five explosions were heard in quick succession on Qeshm Island late Monday, November 2. Residents told IRNA they saw two aircraft flying over the island at the time of the blasts.

The semi-official Fars News Agency also reported explosions in Bandar Lengeh, a port city west of Qeshm Island. Fars said the sound came from the direction of the sea.

Iranian authorities have not confirmed casualties or damage so far.

US Media: Limited Defensive Strikes by US Military

The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed US officials, reported that the US military carried out limited strikes on Qeshm Island overnight.According to the report, the operation was described as “defensive” in nature.

US officials said the strikes were aimed at degrading Iran’s ability to target commercial vessels and US assets in the Strait of Hormuz.Reports from Associated Press, Fox News and Axios added that the strikes targeted surface-to-air missile batteries after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) allegedly fired at a US military aircraft on Monday.

US officials said the strikes were kept deliberately small and quiet to avoid signaling a full-scale military campaign against Iran

Iran Claims: Shot Down US Drones Before Blasts

Just hours before the explosions, Iran’s IRGC made a separate claim.

The IRGC Aerospace Force said it had brought down three US drones near the Strait of Hormuz using electronic warfare systems. According to Press TV, this included two MQM-170 reconnaissance drones south of Qeshm Island and one MQ-9 drone east of the Strait

The IRGC Navy also claimed it captured another drone intact west of the Strait. These claims have not been independently verified by the US.

Why Qeshm Island Matters?

Qeshm Island is the largest island in the Persian Gulf and sits right at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz.

The island is just 25 km off Bandar Abbas and houses key Iranian military infrastructure, including naval bases, underground missile tunnels, drone facilities and air defence batteries.About 20% of the world’s oil supply passes through the Strait of Hormuz daily.

Any military activity around Qeshm Island directly impacts global energy security and oil prices. This is not the first time the island has been targeted. Qeshm was previously hit in June during earlier US-Iran escalations.

What Happens Next?

Tensions remain high. While US officials describe the action as defensive, Iran has warned US warships against entering the Persian Gulf.

US Vice President JD Vance said on Monday that Washington sees “progress” in talks with Iran, suggesting diplomacy is still on the table despite the strikes. For now, both sides have not issued official statements confirming the full extent of damage.
