What Happened:Flydubai Flight FZ1073,
a Boeing 737 MAX 8, departed Dubai International (DXB) at approximately 07:00 local time, bound for Ben Gurion Airport (TLV) in Tel Aviv.
About two hours into the flight, while over Jordanian airspace, the aircraft transmitted squawk code 7700 – the international signal for a general emergency. Minutes later, it transmitted 7500, the code for unlawful interference / hijacking.Flydubai Flight FZ1073
Flightradar24 data confirmed extreme fluctuations. The aircraft dropped from ∼34,000 feet to ∼17,000 feet. CNN’s graphic puts the drop at 17,400 feet in just under two minutes. Other tracking data cited by Israeli media reported a near-vertical rate of up to 30,976 ft/min and a 14,000 ft drop in less than 30 seconds before the first alert.
The flight was diverted to Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport (TUU) in Tabuk, northwestern Saudi Arabia, landing safely at 09:45 local time. The Cockpit Struggle – Flydubai Flight FZ1073

Israeli officials have given a far more dramatic account.Flydubai Flight FZ1073
In a video statement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said:
“The co-pilot of a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv tried to crash the plane after stabbing the pilot, but passengers then held him down while other pilots landed the plane safely… This is a most serious security incident.”
According to Netanyahu, quoting a passenger who was on board:
1:The aircraft “entered a tailspin and began to dive.”
2.Passengers and an off-duty crew member broke into the cockpit.
3.They found the co-pilot “trying to sabotage the plane’s systems” after stabbing the captain.
4.An additional air crew member – described as on-duty flydubai crew deadheading – entered and stabilized the aircraft.
Netanyahu added: “I salute these heroes who showed exceptional resourcefulness and courage. They saved many lives and prevented a major disaster. All passengers are out of harm’s way.”
Defence Minister Israel Katz called it “an attempted jihadist terror attack thwarted only thanks to the heroism of several Israeli passengers.”
Pilots – Conflicting Reports:
There are two conflicting, unverified tracks on pilot identity that your article must note as unconfirmed:
Track 1 – Israeli Official / Hindustan Times / Arab News: The injured captain is an Indian national who fought back and prevented a 9/11-style attack. The alleged attacker is the first officer, an Omani national, who was arrested by Saudi authorities in Tabuk and taken to hospital. He was also injured in the struggle.
Track 2 – N12 / Channel 12 / Times of Israel:
The conflict was between a Russian captain and a Ukrainian co-pilot, and may have been related to the ongoing war or a suicide attempt, not terrorism. This version says one pilot lost consciousness during the fight.
Saudi aviation operator Cluster2 confirmed: “The captain and first officer sustained injuries, and were immediately transferred to hospital.”No independent confirmation of nationality or motive has been released by Flydubai, GCAA, or Saudi authorities.
Passengers’ Account:
Passengers told Channel 12 and i24NEWS:
“We heard screams on the plane. Then they opened the cockpit, and we saw blood, and someone had stabbed the pilot with a pocketknife… We prayed, ‘Shema Yisrael.’ There were moments when we thought we weren’t going to make it out alive.”
Another passenger, Noam, said: “Screams began on the plane… We understand that one of the pilots was stabbed and seriously wounded, and they lost control of the plane. It started to dive quickly. It was very scary.
“Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, praised passengers for “extraordinary determination and resourcefulness.”
Immediate Aftermath:
Israel’s response: The IDF scrambled fighter jets, temporarily closed airspace, and held an emergency security consultation with Netanyahu and Katz. The PM’s office later said the incident is “under control.”Saudi Arabia:
Tabuk airport received a distress call at 08:44 local. Saudi authorities have arrested the suspect pilot and are interrogating him.UAE / Flydubai:
Deployed two replacement aircraft to Tabuk to bring 174-180 passengers (including 27 children per some reports) and crew home. A second flight on the same route, FZ1081, turned back to Dubai hours later – reason unknown.
Investigation:
A joint investigation is underway by Saudi Arabia, Israel, and the UAE. Flydubai urged “all parties to refrain from premature speculation.”
Why It Matters for the Strait of Hormuz Region:
This is the most serious security incident on the Dubai-Tel Aviv corridor since the Abraham Accords opened the route in 2020. It raises critical questions for Gulf aviation security: how a weapon – described as a folding / pocketknife – entered a cockpit, the vetting of crews on politically sensitive routes, and the precedent of an Israel-bound flight making an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, a country with no formal diplomatic ties but growing security coordination with Israel.
